An aside: My mother didn’t like her nickname - Flossie , ok who would :)

The story goes she did not want my name to be Florence…but she lost that challenge.  Though she never called me Florence, Flo, or Flossie…my nickname I will share at another time.

We realized how much our mother’s memory had diminished when she drove to the grocery story and didn’t know how to get back home.  That was her last driving adventure.   Though, when we were out she always said “I can drive!”.   And my answer was always  “tell me which way to turn to get home”.  She would scoff and settle back in the car.

The Sarge was more practical.  He had one fender dent and the police questioned him.  He didn’t realize he had slightly scratched another car in a parking lot but someone else documented. He called us and asked us to give the car to my sister!  Great decision!  Fortunately they lived in the facility that provided meals and we could take him to appointments or the facility provided transportation.

Another key point when looking for a place for someone you care for - ask about transportation.  One facility had one small bus for transportation and took people to appointments two days a week.  If your appointment was at 9 am you would be dropped off, others would be dropped off and they may not be able to pick you up for 4 or more hours!  Look for a facility with multiple vehicles for transportation and that handles appointments every week day!
